I am writing to you to express my concern about WA's rising emissions.

Western Australia is privileged to have so many incredible resources and beautiful places right on our doorstep. We can’t keep taking this for granted. We need legislated climate action to secure our future and protect our people and places from the devastating impact that climate change is already having on this state.

It is an indictment on previous governments that WA is still the only state without a legislated climate act that includes a Paris agreement-aligned 2030 Emissions Reduction Target or a Renewable Energy Target.

I am aware that the Greens are proposing a climate bill and strongly urge you to look at this in detail and consider the measures they are proposing. The urgency for meaningful climate action is more important than party politics.

I am asking this government to pass legislation that will see a significant reduction in our state’s emissions and contains the most up to date, evidence-based policy.

This should include:

- A 1.5°c Paris agreement-aligned 2030 Emissions Reduction Target
- A Renewable Energy Target: to promote investment and reduce power prices.
- A goal to achieve REAL zero emissions: securing real climate action to protect our future.
- 1.5°c-aligned Legislated Methane reduction: as per Australia’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge
- An independent expert advisory body to advise the government: to secure a climate future free from the corrupting influence of fossil fuel companies.
